The traditional use is that to soake it in water before the cutting session.

The traditional target of a Katana is a braided cutting mat.

The braided mat is supposed to bring the same density that an arm or leg. For this purpose, the mat is often wrapped around a section of bamboo to provide the equivalent density of a bone.
