A brief history of the MK2 grenade

The MK2 (or MKII) grenade, nicknamed the pineapple grenade with its oval shape and striated pattern, was the hand grenade of choice for the American armed forces during the WW2. This grenade remained in use until the late 60s.
A color code was adopted for the use of grenades:

• if they were painted yellow, they were used in combat, as they contained an explosive charge
• if they were painted red, they were used for training purposes, as they contained no explosive charge. Later, the red color was abandoned in favor of the blue NATO symbol.

The coloring of grenades was discontinued around 1942, as it affected their effectiveness (accentuating mold, pre-detonation noises and early smoke, revealing the location of grenades before detonation).

The MK2 grenade is now considered obsolete by the armed forces, but it was one of the most famous grenades in the world, thanks to its durability and powerful detonation (lethal range of 50 m).
