The short history of the MK2 grenade
The MK2 (or MKII) grenade, nicknamed the pineapple grenade with its oval shape and striated patterns, was the hand grenade of choice for the American armed forces during the First World War. This grenade remained in use until the late 1960s.
A color code was adopted for the use of grenades:
if they were painted yellow, they were used in combat because they contained an explosive charge
if they were painted red, they were used for training as they had no explosive charge. Later, this red color was abandoned to give way to the blue symbol of NATO.
The colorations of the grenades were put aside around 1942 because they played on the effectiveness of the grenades (accentuation of the mold, noises before the detonation and early smoke which revealed the location of the grenades before the explosion).
The MK2 grenade is considered obsolete by the armed forces to this day, but it was one of the most famous in the world thanks to its durability and powerful detonations (lethal wingspan of 50 m)
