The short history of the M26 grenade
The M26 grenade, nicknamed the lemon grenade because of its citrus-like shape, was the second hand grenade of choice for U.S. and allied forces; the first being the MK2 (MKII) grenade.
The M26 grenade was developed in the early 1950s and has a different purpose than the MK2 grenade. The MK2 grenade had a lethal aim; the goal was to exterminate the enemy. After reflection, the armies deduced that it was more productive to wound the enemy because 3 soldiers would be immobilised: the wounded and generally 2 others who would come to his rescue.
These grenades were very effective because of the way they worked. They were fragmentation grenades that functioned to explode into multiple particles to increase the impact area.
Beyond this aspect, the M26 grenades were called "no noise, no fire, no light" which means that before detonation they emit no noise, no light and no smoke in order to catch the opponent off guard.
