This bamboo katana, known as the Shinai, is designed to offer a training experience close to that of a real katana, while still allowing for high-intensity training. The design of its 'blade' makes it possible to clearly visualise orientation, a crucial aspect in mastering the sword.

Historically, this type of bamboo katana dates back to the Edo period in Japan. At the time, the Shinai was used as a safer alternative to the Bokken, a hard wooden sword that was often dangerous to train with. The Shinai katana is made up of three bamboo blades attached together, offering a flexibility that considerably reduces the risk of bruising by absorbing impact better than a Bokken stick or a standard Shinai.
