Key ring, Ba Gua - The 8 Trigrams of Yijing
The 8 Yijing trigrams, also known as Ba Gua, are fundamental symbols of traditional Chinese cosmology.
Each trigram is made up of three lines, either solid (yang) or broken (yin). The combinations of these trigrams form the 64 hexagrams, which are used in the Yijing (Book of Changes) to provide divinatory guidance and philosophical insights.
The 8 trigrams are as follows:
- Qian (Heaven, the Creative): Composed of three yang lines, symbolizes creative force, power and strength.
- Kun (Earth, the Receptive): Composed of three yin lines, represents receptivity, fertility and stability.
- Zhen (Thunder, the Awakener): Composed of lines yang in the center and yin on the outside, evokes movement, stimulation and dynamic energy.
- Xun (Wind, the Gentle): Composed of yin lines in the center and yang on the outside, symbolizes flexibility, penetration and growth.
- Kan (Water, the Abyss): Composed of two yin lines between a yang line, represents water, darkness and danger.
- Li (Fire, Light): Composed of two yang lines between a yin line, symbolizes light, clarity and illumination.
- Gen (Mountain, the Immobile): Composed of yin lines at the top and yang at the base, evokes stability, fixation and immobility.
- Dui (Marsh, Joy): Composed of lines yang at the top and yin at the base, represents joy, openness and expression.
These trigrams are used in Yijing practice to cast hexagrams and interpret divinatory responses based on the specific combinations of trigrams obtained.
