La Shashka est originaire du Caucase et son nom signifie en circassien « long couteau » (са́шхо). Lors des guerres du Caucase les Cosaques ont adopté la Shashka comme sabre règlementaire. En 1881 le lieutenant général Gorlov remplace les différents types de sabres utilisés dans l’armée par un modèle standardisé de Shashka comportant trois variantes pour les différentes armes. La Shashka équipe également l’armée rouge (dont le modèle de 1927 diffère peu de celui de 1881).

The Shashka or shasqua is a special kind of sabre single-edged, single-handed, and guardless sword. In appearance, the shashka is midway between a full sabre and a straight sword. It has a slightly curved blade, and can be effective for both slashing and thrusting. The blade is either hollowed or fullered. There is no guard, but a large, curved pommel. The hilt is frequently highly decorated. Shashkas from the Caucausus, as opposed to Russian versions, are carried in wooden scabbards that encloses part of the hilt. It is worn with the cutting edge to the rear, opposite to the sabre.
